When removing rpm packages, errors may occur when multiple packages with the same name are installed. This can happen when the two packages are different versions or if the two packages have different architecture. This should only happen when installing packages manually. Using up2date will not cause this issue.
To correct this, remove both packages:
# rpm -e --allmatches packagename
If there are dependency errors, force removal might be needed. Note that while packages can be forcibly removed, this may cause the system to become unstable.
An example of a package that should never be removed forcibly is glibc. For questionable packages, contact Technical Support for confirmation before removing them.
To force remove the package:
# rpm -e --allmatches --nodeps [packagename]
