CentOS / RHEL 7 : How to Change Timezone

by admin

timedatectl is a new feature on RHEL7. It may be used to query and change the system clock and its settings. Follow the below steps to change the timezone to IST (India). (Execute the below commands as root user).

1. List all the available timezones using the below command. You will get a long list of timezones using this command.

# timedatectl list-timezones
Africa/Abidjan
Africa/Accra
Africa/Addis_Ababa
Africa/Algiers
....

2. Locate the correct timezone you need that is in the Indian timezone and set the specific timezone. There is a command called tzselect which can help you to find the desired timezone. For example, to find the timezone in India, use it as shown below :

# tzselect
Please identify a location so that time zone rules can be set correctly.
Please select a continent or ocean.
 1) Africa
 2) Americas
 3) Antarctica
 4) Arctic Ocean
 5) Asia
 6) Atlantic Ocean
 7) Australia
 8) Europe
 9) Indian Ocean
10) Pacific Ocean
11) none - I want to specify the time zone using the Posix TZ format.
#? 5
Please select a country.
 1) Afghanistan 18) Israel 35) Palestine
 2) Armenia 19) Japan 36) Philippines
 3) Azerbaijan 20) Jordan 37) Qatar
 4) Bahrain 21) Kazakhstan 38) Russia
 5) Bangladesh 22) Korea (North) 39) Saudi Arabia
 6) Bhutan 23) Korea (South) 40) Singapore

#? 14

The following information has been given:

	India

Therefore TZ='Asia/Kolkata' will be used.
Local time is now:	Fri Apr 28 10:55:52 IST 2017.
Universal Time is now:	Fri Apr 28 05:25:52 UTC 2017.
Is the above information OK?
1) Yes
2) No
#?

You can make this change permanent for yourself by appending the line
	TZ='Asia/Kolkata'; export TZ
to the file '.profile' in your home directory; then log out and log in again.

Here is that TZ value again, this time on standard output so that you
can use the /usr/bin/tzselect command in shell scripts:
Asia/Kolkata
# timedatectl set-timezone Asia/Kolkata

3. Run the “date” command to verify the changes.

# date
Fri Apr 28 11:03:43 IST 2017

You can also use the timedatectl status command to check the detailed status.

# timedatectl status
Local time: Fri 2017-04-28 11:07:53 IST
Universal time: Fri 2017-04-28 05:37:53 UTC
        RTC time: Fri 2017-04-28 05:37:53
       Time zone: Asia/Kolkata (IST, +0530)
     NTP enabled: no
NTP synchronized: yes
 RTC in local TZ: no
      DST active: n/a
